Canon PowerShot S100 Tachyon Edition locations

Solved

Punchcards

  • It's believed the answer to the punchcards below will contain the locations of 4 other specially modified cameras.

Steps taken (spoilers below, if you want to solve yourself):
  1. The holes in a single string format, with 1 being right-most column, are:
    Card 1) x32010x32000022002x32000222000
    Card 2) 002210320003200232000000000000
    Card 3) xx0222x02120x46454x20202000000
    Card 4) x02210564477x02210x02020000000
  2. Punchcards are 10 x 30 in size - appearing to be in 5 groups of 6 numbers
  3. Each set of 6 is a guitar chord, resulting in:
    Card 1) -32010 C, -32000 C7, 022002 Emadd2, -32000 C7, 222000 Bm/F#
    Card 2) 002210 Am/E, 320003 G, 200232 D/F#, 000000 --, 000000 --
    Card 3) --0222 DM7, -02120 AM7, -46454 C#m7, -20202 Bm7, 000000 --
    Card 4) -02210 Am, 564477 B7/A, -02210 Am, -02020 AM7, 000000 --

Encrypted text

  • Enitech received a letter from "a member of the resistance" containing two encrypted messages
Clue 1) wph psmawxtugj umbpvi vw qsnv lkm vsfzhge fy alj gczcaj bh m qsus ll uleieuw vvopj yh yp xoe ihzcijnbx uvscwmewaif momgkm rwmv dtiok trs fmt kbv qlpr kcmp xksir qigbs qyi oef pckzd nrqqr timv rbui xzf lvnv ssxf rmykb

Steps taken (spoilers below, if you want to solve yourself):
  1. Presuming they're vigenere ciphers - working backwords, hoping the first word of the decrypted text was "THE", the two phrases returned keys of
    Clue 1) DID
    Clue 2) TIC

Encrypted text helps decode the punchcards

  1. Possible words were tested with the encrypted text until matches were made, and eventually keys were determined - note the common theme is Pink Floyd lyrics.
    1. Did you see the frightened ones
Did you hear the falling bombs
      Did you ever wonder
Why we had to run for shelter
When the promise of a brave new world
Unfurled beneath a clear blue sky
      (Goodbye Blue Sky)
    2. Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
      (Time)
    • The songs associate with the punchcards in that the chords are key progressions in the songs:
      Card 3) Dmaj7 Amaj7 C#m7 Bm7 = Time
Card 4) Am B7/A Am Amaj7 = Goodbye Blue Sky
    • The other cards are key progressions in the songs
      Card 1) C C7 Emadd2 C7 Bm/F# = Welcome to the Machine
      Card 2) Am/E G D/F# = Wish You Were Here
  2. When the discovered key strings were applied to the encrypted cipher text, the results were:
Clue 1, via Card 3) the resistance device is near the surface of the ground at a park in granada hills ca at the following coordinates thirty four point two six one five five three minus one one eight point four nine six four four eight
Clue 2, via Card 4) the resistance device is being held in a corner newstand and grocery store at fifty two canal street new york ny ask lily for the resistance package
    • The clues refer to a "resistance device", assumedly the 'specially modified' camera.

Digit pairs

  • Initially posted on January 24, 2008 (link)
In the central newspaper article is a block of 2 digit numbers, each digit within the range of 0-5. The number pairs range (in base 5) from 00-44, with the addition on a single pair 55.
Clue 3) 13 10 44 24 32 13 22 41 04 34 13 42 32 24 11 12 01 04 22 31 02 24 11 12 12 40 32 32 33 31 13 20 24 44 04 13 20 12 04 22 01 13 20 13 12 44 04 44 23 12 04 10 33 30 23 44 24 11 00 33 31 40 14 31 00 00 11 12 42 30 13 20 55 55 33 12 11 22 33 55 33 41 02 13 21 41 24 12 10 11 00 41 55 14 31 34 14 42 12 04 34 20 33 20 00 21 24 23 44 04 34 14 42 12 04 34 20 33 20 00 30 01 34 00 11 32 01 42 33 21 30 01 43 21 30 40 10 21 44 01 44 04 00 13 02 21 10 14 10 40 32 12 10 55 24 12 10

Steps taken (spoilers below, if you want to solve yourself):
  1. catherwood reverse engineered the number pairs, assuming it followed the same vigenere method as the first two clues, where the result was a simple substitution.
Beginning with the solution text "THE RESISTANCE DEVICE", and the first phrases from the final two lyric sets, she determined what she assumed to be the ciphertexts:
    • Using Card 2) LVC FYLPAGKLQY FEIBGP (Wish You Were Here)
So you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
      Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
      A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroe...
    • Using Card 1) PLP TSEMERSBPA HPXWOI (Welcome to the Machine)
Welcome my son, welcome to the machine
      Where have you been?
It's alright, we know where you've been
You've been in the pipeline, filling in time,
Provided with toys and 'Scouting for Boys'.
      You bought...
  2. Note that the letter patterns for Card 2 match Clue 3, and Card 1 matches Clue 4.
  3. Reversing the substitution (determining what letters match what numbers), we find the original key (for both number sets) to be:
    (as 00-44) SBZOGVEILMWXPDFRTYHKNAQUC
    (55) J
    • (the reason for this set of seemingly random letters as the substitution key is yet unknown)
  4. The final decrypted codes are:
Clue 3, via Card 2) the resistance device is beneath the surface of the ground at the following coordinates twenty eight point six eight three four four five minus eighty one point three nine six six zero four
Clue 4, via Card 1) the resistance device is beneath the surface of the ground at the following coordinates thirty point four seven four two eight one minus ninety seven point nine eight five four two eight

Package Locations and Contents

Clue 1

"The resistance device is near the surface of the ground at a park in Granada Hills, CA at the following coordinates: 34.261553 -118.496448"

  • vpisteve was able to get to the location and retrieve a package
  • From his picture set here:

The package consists of a Thermos containing the following items:
    • Camera: Canon PowerShot S110 with the back plate removed
    • Battery charger
    • USB Cable
    • Empty 32MB CF memory card (no files, no recoverable files)
    • Survival multi-tool - compass/whistle/thermometer/magnifying glass
Clue 2

"The resistance device is being held in a corner newstand and grocery store, at 52 Canal St., New York, NY. Ask Lily for the resistance package"

  • This package was reportedly picked up by a person named "Bill", whose whereabouts at the moment are unknown, and no report of this package has yet been found.
  • Update: The Facebook member Zoltan Gerts posted in the Cyberdyne facebook group a man calling himself Bill intercepted him and gave him the package. He also posted a photo of the package to the group.
This is so bizarre that I don't even know where to start. Today as I am leaving work I get stopped in the lobby by a tall hooded man wearing a skiing mask and some kinda goggles that completely cover his face. I am admittedly a little freaked out but there is something about his voice that tells me that he is not some average bum asking for change. He seems to be be in a rush because he is talking very fast. He tells me that he is an associate of my father (whom I have not heard from in over a decade) and that he has a package that I must keep safe no matter what happens. He then mumbles something about a "rogue resistance cell" and something about preventing someone from "compromising the integrity of the code" which doesn't make any sense to me.

I figure I would post about it here because I suspect that my previous post here is somehow connected to this Bill finding me so soon after unless it's some kinda weird coincidence...

Anyway the package is a brown paper bag. Inside the bag there is a thermostat. I unscrew the thermostat and within I find what looks to be a broken canon powershot S100 digital camera, a USB cable, and a charger. There is also an all in one whistle/compass/thermometer thing. Finally there is also a note with the following instruction:

    Face North.
    Take a photograph.
    Contact Enitech Research. '

Does this make any sense to anyone here? Who is Bill? How does he know my father? What is Enitech Research and how do I contact them?

    Please help.
