Solved
- A puzzle composed of three parts:
- Solution process in a nutshell:
- Punchcard meanings were speculated
- Encrypted text verified what the punchcards represented, and were decoded
- New number pairs were reverse-engineered given the info from the first encrypted text solves
[edit] Punchcards
- It's believed the answer to the punchcards below will contain the locations of 4 other specially modified cameras.
[edit] Steps taken (spoilers below, if you want to solve yourself):
- The holes in a single string format, with 1 being right-most column, are:
- Card 1) x32010x32000022002x32000222000
- Card 2) 002210320003200232000000000000
- Card 3) xx0222x02120x46454x20202000000
- Card 4) x02210564477x02210x02020000000
- Punchcards are 10 x 30 in size - appearing to be in 5 groups of 6 numbers
- Each set of 6 is a guitar chord, resulting in:
- Card 1) -32010 C, -32000 C7, 022002 Emadd2, -32000 C7, 222000 Bm/F#
- Card 2) 002210 Am/E, 320003 G, 200232 D/F#, 000000 --, 000000 --
- Card 3) --0222 DM7, -02120 AM7, -46454 C#m7, -20202 Bm7, 000000 --
- Card 4) -02210 Am, 564477 B7/A, -02210 Am, -02020 AM7, 000000 --
[edit] Encrypted text
- Enitech received a letter from "a member of the resistance" containing two encrypted messages

[edit] Steps taken (spoilers below, if you want to solve yourself):
- Presuming they're vigenere ciphers - working backwords, hoping the first word of the decrypted text was "THE", the two phrases returned keys of
- Clue 1) DID
- Clue 2) TIC
[edit] Encrypted text helps decode the punchcards
- Possible words were tested with the encrypted text until matches were made, and eventually keys were determined - note the common theme is Pink Floyd lyrics.
- Did you see the frightened ones
Did you hear the falling bombs
Did you ever wonder
Why we had to run for shelter
When the promise of a brave new world
Unfurled beneath a clear blue sky (Goodbye Blue Sky) - Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town (Time)
- The songs associate with the punchcards in that the chords are key progressions in the songs:
Card 3) Dmaj7 Amaj7 C#m7 Bm7 = Time
Card 4) Am B7/A Am Amaj7 = Goodbye Blue Sky - The other cards are key progressions in the songs
Card 1) C C7 Emadd2 C7 Bm/F# = Welcome to the Machine
Card 2) Am/E G D/F# = Wish You Were Here
- Did you see the frightened ones
- When the discovered key strings were applied to the encrypted cipher text, the results were:
- Clue 1, via Card 3) the resistance device is near the surface of the ground at a park in granada hills ca at the following coordinates thirty four point two six one five five three minus one one eight point four nine six four four eight
- Clue 2, via Card 4) the resistance device is being held in a corner newstand and grocery store at fifty two canal street new york ny ask lily for the resistance package
- The clues refer to a "resistance device", assumedly the 'specially modified' camera.
[edit] Digit pairs
- Initially posted on January 24, 2008 (link)
- In the central newspaper article is a block of 2 digit numbers, each digit within the range of 0-5. The number pairs range (in base 5) from 00-44, with the addition on a single pair 55.

[edit] Steps taken (spoilers below, if you want to solve yourself):
- catherwood reverse engineered the number pairs, assuming it followed the same vigenere method as the first two clues, where the result was a simple substitution.
- Beginning with the solution text "THE RESISTANCE DEVICE", and the first phrases from the final two lyric sets, she determined what she assumed to be the ciphertexts:
- Using Card 2) LVC FYLPAGKLQY FEIBGP (Wish You Were Here)
- So you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroe...
- So you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
- Using Card 1) PLP TSEMERSBPA HPXWOI (Welcome to the Machine)
- Welcome my son, welcome to the machine
Where have you been?
It's alright, we know where you've been
You've been in the pipeline, filling in time,
Provided with toys and 'Scouting for Boys'.
You bought...
- Welcome my son, welcome to the machine
- Using Card 2) LVC FYLPAGKLQY FEIBGP (Wish You Were Here)
- Beginning with the solution text "THE RESISTANCE DEVICE", and the first phrases from the final two lyric sets, she determined what she assumed to be the ciphertexts:
- Note that the letter patterns for Card 2 match Clue 3, and Card 1 matches Clue 4.
- Reversing the substitution (determining what letters match what numbers), we find the original key (for both number sets) to be:
- (as 00-44) SBZOGVEILMWXPDFRTYHKNAQUC
- (55) J
- (the reason for this set of seemingly random letters as the substitution key is yet unknown)
- The final decrypted codes are:
- Clue 3, via Card 2) the resistance device is beneath the surface of the ground at the following coordinates twenty eight point six eight three four four five minus eighty one point three nine six six zero four
- Clue 4, via Card 1) the resistance device is beneath the surface of the ground at the following coordinates thirty point four seven four two eight one minus ninety seven point nine eight five four two eight
